I was going to write a blog post about speaking the truth in our lives, but as I sat down to write, I remembered I wanted to check YouTube to see if there were any clips of Gabby Sidibe on Letterman last night. She’s the new acting sensation in the movie, Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire. Now, two weeks ago, I had no idea what “Push” was, or it’s author, or the director, Lee Daniels. And I certainly had no idea who Gabby was. But over the past two weeks, I’ve read articles, heard Lee and Sapphire on NPR and heard just brief audio clips of the movie that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up and my eyes fill with tears. So tonight, when I caught the clip of Ms. Sidibe on last week’s Ellen DeGeneres show, I realized I had found the topic for my newest blog post, ” BELIEVE AND IT WILL HAPPEN.”

If you haven’t seen the clip, Gabby comes dancing out, in true Ellen style, to the delight of the audience. Sure she is a full figured woman and she moves her body with such pride and joy it’s enough to make any woman ashamed for hiding her body under baggy clothes or dark lighting. She sat down and proceeded to share with Ellen that she and her roommate, Adam, made up the dance, weeks before she even got asked on the show. ” You mean you choreographed it just in CASE you’d get on the show?” Ellen asks incredulously. “Yeah, we’ve been planning on it.” Now that is the power of positive thinking.

Here”s a true unknown ( her only acting was in a school play) that apparently puts on the performance of a lifetime in what critics describe as the heart-wrenching, gut-twisting story of a young girl who is abused in the most miserable way by her mother and father, but yet, through it all, perseveres and constantly shows that she has a love of life and most of all, for herself. I have not seen the movie yet (truth be told I’m afraid to) but from even reading the reviews and seeing clips, I’m completely inspired.

I have read the book, “The Secret” and in it, it speaks of the power of positive thinking. I have tried throughout my life to use this power to create fertile ground for change. I have tried to incorporate into my day positive affirmations, positive thoughts  and visions and have tried to visualize the life I want. But never have I taken the kind of action that Gabby describes above. To have spent the time creating the dance she’d do on Ellen displays a complete and utter self-confidence that says to the Universe, ” This WILL happen!”

In these very tough economic times, many of us have lost hope. Lost the belief that we can make things happen in our lives against what seem like insurmoutable odds. I wonder if I will ever have the strength to actually see  “Precious”‘ and if I do, I’m sure the challenges of my life will completely pale in comparison. But what Gabby herself teaches us, in her wonderfully light, inspiring clip on Ellen’s show, is that if you believe, it will happen. You just must believe!
