Earlier this week, I watched a live coaching session held between a business mentor of mine and one of his students. She had agreed to share her questions with our entrepreneurs group and in the process of her sharing, she was really emotional. She shared some of the fears she had about her ability to succeed in building the business of her dreams, which was to help mothers of disabled children, because she was a mom of a handicapped child herself.
What was so striking to me was that in the exercise, he asked her to make several declarative statements that illustrated belief in herself; things like, “I can be successful,” and “I have what it takes to help others.” It was just from stating these powerful affirmation statements that she found her eyes welling up.
Once she’d gone through the process of talking through things a bit more, she said she felt amazing relief and for the first time in a long time, felt she had the clarify to move forward.
I share this story because it demonstrates how we can let limiting beliefs get in the way of reaching our highest potential. We can let fear of what other people think of us or feelings of fear or lack of self-worth get in the way of reaching for our dreams.
If you’re reading this and you’re a yoga teacher, this might come up for you because you’re not teaching right now, even though you’ve graduated from your 200 hour training because you’re afraid. Or, if you have been teaching for a while, you might find that things feel stale for you or you find yourself holding back from pursuing ongoing education and growth. It could be that you’ve got ideas you want to put into action but you’re letting fear of failure hold you back.
Whatever it is, know that you CAN do it. The only thing you have to do is take that first step and try. And if it fails, so what? Try again. And if that fails too, try again.
There’s nothing that we might try as yoga teachers that’s really risky, even though sometimes it feels like showing ourselves to our students might feel really vulnerable to you. Know that in your stepping up to share of yourself, you encourage others to do the same.
