I went to a yoga class on Saturday over this past weekend. I have been trying to go to class Saturdays from 8-9 am on a regular basis as it’s a time chunk I have available in my schedule. I find that I have such a hard time getting to class. If you’re a yoga teacher, perhaps you can relate to some of the reasons I find for why I can’t make it to class:

As being in the studio to teach is my livelihood, sometimes when I have time off, I don’t want to go into a yoga studio;

Sometimes I trick myself into believing that teaching and doing a quick demo here and then during class is “at least doing some yoga;”

When I have time off from teaching, I have other things I’m doing; writing, running errands, doing other various things at my desk;

I often teach at times when I’d like to take class.

I could go on further, but you get the idea. Do any of these reasons resonate with you?

By the same token, when I practice yoga:

I feel connected to my body;

I feel like I’ve done something healthy for myself;

I feel such a strong sense of peace just being in a quiet space.

So, my commitment over the next few weeks is to make a concerted effort to make it to class. Here are some strategies I’ll use:

Book ahead. I plan on looking ahead at my schedule and booking classes into it for the next few weeks.

Stay open to home practice. As much as I make excuses why home practice doesn’t work for me, it does. Sometimes it’s better than nothing and many times, it’s better than going to a class. I have a YogaGlo subscription and I always learn new things when I take the classes on there, especially if I take Tiffany Cruikshank’s classes.

Resist the urge to skip it. This is the hardest part. When there’s always something else to do, it’s easy to just skip it. I need to connect to the sense of peace I’ll have when I done BEFORE I go to class to help motivate me to go.
